New Orleans West Bank grew significantly after the opening of the first span of the Greater New Orleans bridge (now known as the Crescent City Connection) in 1958. The Tall Timbers-Brechtel neighborhood is named for its Tall Timbers housing development (one of three in the neighborhood) and John Brechtel, the Algiers resident who started the New Orleans Recreation Department. At the from of the park which bears his name is New Orleans’ Whispering Giant (pictured above). Brechtel Park is part of the Trail of Whispering Giants, a collection of sculptures across North America and Europe by artist Peter Toth. They are carved to chronicle “the epic struggle of all men facing injustices, inhumanity, and tyranny.” Brechtel park is also known as a great spot for birdwatching.
