Saint Augustine Catholic Church

The oldest African American Catholic parish in the country, founded in 1841 by Tremé’s free people of color on former plantation land. Its history runs deep — the ‘War of the Pews,’ parishioner Homer Plessy, and the Tomb of the Unknown Slave in the side garden honoring the enslaved buried nearby in unmarked graves. Still an active parish, it’s known for soul-stirring jazz Masses that draw worshippers and visitors alike.
