Congo Square
Hallowed ground in Louis Armstrong Park where, under French and Spanish rule, enslaved and free Africans gathered on Sundays to trade, drum, and dance — keeping alive the rhythms that seeded jazz and much of American music. Today the open square still draws Sunday drum circles, second lines, and festivals at the edge of Tremé, just across Rampart Street from the French Quarter.
