Also referred to as Lower Mid-City, the Tulane Gravier neighborhood has been defined through its ages by its commerce. In the early days, it had canals which brought goods downtown from Lake Pontchartrain. The twentieth century brought the Falstaff and Dixie Brewing Companies to the neighborhood, giving it the moniker “the beer district”. Today the breweries are closed, but the advent of new, modern medical facilities owned by LCMC, LSU, and the VA have led to the neighborhood being known as the Medical District.
