Welcome to Gert Town

Gert Town is a historic neighborhood in New Orleans, situated near the city’s center. The name “Gert Town” is believed to have originated from “Gehrke’s Town,” named after Alfred Gehrke, a general store owner whose establishment became a local gathering spot in the late 19th century. Over time, the pronunciation evolved into “Gert Town”.

The area was once part of the McCarty Plantation and remained largely undeveloped until the late 19th century. Significant development occurred with the introduction of streetcar lines and the establishment of Lincoln and Johnson Parks, which became popular venues for African American musicians during the early jazz era .

Gert Town has faced environmental challenges, notably due to the presence of the Thompson-Hayward chemical plant, which operated from 1931 to 1986. The plant’s activities led to contamination issues, resulting in health concerns for residents and subsequent legal actions.

Despite these challenges, Gert Town is home to Xavier University of Louisiana, the nation’s only historically Black Catholic university. The neighborhood also boasts cultural landmarks like the Blue Plate Building, a former mayonnaise factory now converted into artist lofts . Community events, such as the Gert Town Festival, continue to celebrate the area’s rich heritage and resilience.
